Peter Dutton (born 18 November 1970) is an Australian politician and member of the Liberal Party of Australia. He is currently serving as the Minister for Defence in the Morrison government. He was first elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 2001, representing the Division of Dickson in Queensland.
Early Life and Education
Peter Dutton was born in Brisbane on 18 November 1970. He attended the Queensland Police Academy and worked as a police officer for the Queensland Police Service for almost a decade. He also worked as a business manager in the private sector before entering politics. Dutton holds a Bachelor of Business from the Queensland University of Technology.
Political Career
Dutton was first elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 2001, representing the Division of Dickson. He was subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019 federal elections. He has served in various ministerial positions in the Howard, Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison governments.
In December 2014, Dutton was appointed as Minister for Immigration and Border Protection in the Abbott government. During his tenure, he implemented controversial immigration policies such as Operation Sovereign Borders and the offshore processing of asylum seekers. He remained in this role until August 2018, when he resigned and challenged Malcolm Turnbull for the leadership of the Liberal Party.
Following his unsuccessful leadership challenge, Dutton was returned to his previous ministerial position as Minister for Home Affairs. In March 2021, he was appointed as the Minister for Defence in the Morrison government.
Political Positions
Dutton is considered a conservative member of the Liberal Party. He has been vocal on issues such as border security, national security, and immigration policy. He has also been critical of climate change action and has supported the use of coal as a source of energy.
